Course: Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Objectives:
This session will demonstrate the current evidence on the effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) as a safe and affordable caries arresting and preventive agent. SDF can be used as a comprehensive caries management program. Systematic reviews have demonstrated that SDF is effective for caries arrest on cavitated lesions in primary and permanent teeth and root caries in the elderly. It may also prevent new lesions. This session will present the indications and contraindications for its use. Next, the discussion will center on the easy and noninvasive steps on how to apply it. Although it stains the lesions dark as it arrests them, it provides clinicians with an additional tool for caries management when esthetics are not a primary concern.
