COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Recent studies have offered new insight into caries formation, management, and treatment. The ‘old standard’ of drill and fill no longer applies.  This session will discuss the current concepts in caries formation, diagnosis of caries using the ICDAS caries classification, and how to do the Slot prep for Minimal Invasive Dentistry using GICs as the restorative material of choice in primary and permanent teeth. There will be a discussion on how to treat many caries with SDF. There will be a section on how to use the latest Vital Pulp Therapy techniques and materials like Biodentine and not formocresol. Lastly, the participants will learn the indications and the steps to do a Hall Technique. The participants will be able to apply this information in creating a more kid friendly atmosphere with less drilling and less stress on the pediatric dental patient. 

GOALS:

  1. Understand the role of SDF in caries management
  2. Learn now GICs are a better restorative alternative to resin composites
  3. Learn the ICDAS caries classification and know when to restore and when not to restore
  4. Learn the latest Vital Pulp Therapy techniques and materials for primary and permanent teeth
  5. Know how to do the Hall technique 

OBJECTIVES:

  1. List the indications and the steps to using SDF
  2. Explain how to mix and condense glass ionomer cements in slot preps and list why GICs are a better restorative material than resin composites

The segment on SHCN:

Description: 

This course will cover the latest in medical and dental issues in the treatment of patients with Special Health Care Needs.  The course topics will include some of the more common medical and dental related issues that will be seen in the dental office.  These topics include behavioral and psychological issues, neurological disorders, blood and endocrine discrasias, pre-term births and cleft lip and cleft palate. 

Goals: 

  1.  Be able to recognize the most common disorders amongst your patient population
  2. Be able to successfully treat patients with medical and dental disorders
  3.  Be able to understand the relationship between your patients’ medications and their increased risk for dental related issues.
  4. Understand when and how to modify behavior management techniques to the patient’s specific medical issues. 

Objectives: 

  1.  Know the incidence and pathology of those medical and dental disorders.
  2. Recognize the associated medications for those medical disorders.
  3. Know the specific dental care related to those medical disorders.
  4. Recognize that some disorders have a greater risk of caries based on that disorder.
  5. Recognize that behavior management of these medical and dental disorders will require modifications.  The recommended modifications will be discussed.
